Man has been creating, maintaining, and converting Imperata cylindrica grasslands for centuries. Quite vast areas of these grasslands now exist in most countries in tropical Asia, some parts of West Africa, and to a limited extent in Latin America. As populations increase, and forests disappear, many believe that these grasslands are a largely underutilized resource. The countries affected want to increase the contribution of these lands to the local and national economies, and enhance their environmental services. A number of research and development institutions are devoting attention to the diverse problems and challenges in this effort.
