"Australia is a land of extremes. It is the small-est, lowest and flattest continent on Earth but the sixth largest country; it covers an area of over 7.6 million km2 but the vast majority of the population live within a narrow strip adjacent to the eastern and southeastern coasts; apart from Antarctica it is the driest continent (Figure 1.1) but it features a wide range of climatic regimes (Figure 1.2), from the tropical north, through the arid expanses of the interior, tc the temperate regions of the south; its location in the low to middle latl-!udes on that part of the globe where the El Nino and Southern Oscillation phenomena exert their greatest influence contributes to anntural climate variability that is probably as great as that of any other country on earth."
