Kirsten Halsnaes is a leading economist on climate change studies, covering various developmental, economic and environmental aspects. She has an MSc in economics from the University of Copenhagen and a PhD in economics. Together with Professor Markandya, she was a coordinating lead author for costing methodology issues in the IPCC Third Assessment Report and has also been a lead author on the IPCC Synthesis Report and on their Second Assessment Report. She has contributed to research on environmental economic issues in various areas, including studies of ancillary benefits for the energy sector and transportation, estimation of global markets for carbon reduction measures, and integrated studies of developmental and environmental impacts. Over a period of ten years she has been the principal economist of the UNEP Collaborating Centre on Energy and Environment at Riso National Laboratory, where she holds a position as senior research specialist. Her publications include ‘Costing Methodologies’ of IPCC, 2001 and ‘Mitigation and Market Potential for Kyoto Mechanisms: Estimation of the Global Market Potential for Co-operative Green house Gas Emission Reduction Policies’, Energy Policy, Vol 30, No 1, January 2002.
