The purpose of this book is to offer a unified view of the climate challenge that confronts modern society. The subject matter spans many disciplines, ranging from materials science to the social sciences. Its complexity is immense. Here we adopt a pragmatic approach, marking out the principal reference points that circumscribe the whole subject. These consist essentially of the basic mechanisms that govern climate equilibrium, the various causes of natural changes in the climate, the history of the climate and its troubled past, the changes that are taking place now and the role played by mankind.
