"As is well known, those who complain about the weather rarely do anything about it; and still less is done about the climate, except occasionally to exaggerate in the interests of tourism. Sensitive to this situation, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and its Rumford Committee assembled from many sciences and institutions the climatic experts, with their knowledge, theories, and plans. A two-day conference was held in May 1952 at the Academy’s House, where a score of students of the wide science of climatology and three score of the specially curious analyzed and debated the evidences of climatic change and the possible sources of such variations. The success of the five sessions encourages the belief that valuable advances in knowledge can arise from planned conferences of specialists from neighboring disciplines."
