"Scientific curiosity has always proceeded through the accumulation of observations, on the one hand, and the organization of the accumulated knowledge into models, on the other. Through the history of science, observations have proceeded from qualitative to quantitative, and models from descriptive to mathematical and numerical. In the past, however, these two paths taken towards greater knowledge have remained roughly parallel, with strong interactions only occurring at special junctures we often call scientific revolutions (c/. Kuhn, 1970)."
