The first edition of “Hydrology for Engineers” was published in 1958, and has PREFACE been widely used as a textbook in both senior and graduate courses. In the intervening years there have been many important developments in the science of hydrology, and techniques now available are generally superior to those available in 1958. This second edition represents an extensive revision of the earlier text. Chapters on hydrologic simulation, stochastic hydrology, and morphology of river basins have been added, and extensive changes have been made throughout the balance of the text. The importance of the digital computer as a tool for hydrologic analysis is stressed, but recognizing that not everyone has access to computers, we still discuss the older methods, though in somewhat less detail. The basic processes of hydrology continue to be stressed, in a belief that an understanding of these processes is essential to the application of any of the tools of hydrology.
