This book is based on results of a three-year (1999-2001) concerted action, the Comparative Analysis and Rationalization of Second-moments Turbulence Models (CAR-TUM) project, which was supported by the European Commission’s Marine Science and Technology (MAST) Programme. This volume extends and supplements the existing book literature on turbulence in oceans and lakes (see comprehensive collections and monographs like Fischer et al. [19791, Nihoul [1980], Galperin and Orszag [1993], Wilcox [1989], Lerman et al. [1995], Pattiarathi [1996], Imberger [1998], Kantha and Clayson [2000a, b], Burchard [2002b|).
