The year 1974 marked not only the end of the International Hydrological Decade but also the tercentenary of the founding of scientific hydrology by Perrault and Mariotte in France. Such occasions prompt a mood of contemplation and review which in this instance culminated in the preparation of a second edition of Principles of Hydrology. I am grateful for the kind way in which the first edition was received and gratified to know that so many people found it useful. Since its preparation, however, important advances have been made, particularly in the fields of soil moisture, groundwater, and runoff, which called for extensive revision. In fact much of the book has been rewritten although some original material has been retained, especially in the earlier chapters. A chapter on the drainage basin has been added by way of conclusion and the chapter bibliographies have been revised and updated.
