The study analyzes the record-high September 2022 mean temperature experienced across Western North America (WNA), which broke numerous all-time temperature records in US cities. Using coupled climate models (E3SMv2 and RRM), the research confirms the significant influence of human-induced warming (anthropogenic climate change) on this extreme heat event. The analysis estimates that climate change increased the probability of occurrence of this record heat by a factor of 6 to 67 times and simultaneously raised the magnitude of the event by 0.6 to 1 Kelvin (K). Essentially, the research concludes that the extreme intensity and likelihood of the September 2022 WNA heat are directly attributable to the warming caused by human activities.
