"“Can you give me a reference to a book on monitoring?” is the kind of question we are frequently asked by colleagues who are planning to design a monitoring scheme. Although this is a perfectly reasonable question, we became increas ingly uneasy, because we had to admit that, to our knowledge, a book meeting these researchers’ needs did not exist. More frustration built up as monitoring projects grew in number, diversity and importance in our research environ ment. Therefore, after much hesitation, we decided to try and write such a book ourselves. But why were we not satisfied with the existing literature? Let us spell this out in some detail, because this explains largely why we wrote this book the way we did."
