"The Climate System Monitoring (CSM) project of the World Climate Data and Monitoring Programme (WCDMP) was initiated in 1984 fol lowing a recommendation ofthe Ninth Congress of the World Meteoro logical Organization (WMO) in response to the occurrence of signifi cant climate system anomalies over the last few years associated with adverse impacts on the social and economic activities of many countries. CSM is designed to provide Meteorological Services and other national and international organizations with synthesized information on the state of the climate system and diagnostic insights into signifi cant large-scale anomalies of regional and global consequence. A CSM Monthly Bulletin has been issued since July 1984."
