It is a hundred years since the federal parliament took over the meteorological functions of the states and established the Bureau of Meteorology. During the 19th century, the collecting of weather observations had been one of the more onerous duties of the colonial astronomers, diverting them from their stargazing. They had to spend valuable time taking instruments to volunteers in the bush and tabulating their monthly rainfall and temperature returns. Most of the astronomers were eager for the federal government to relieve them of their meteorological role, which was becoming more burdensome every year, and allow their observatories to resume a purely astronomical function.
